Doug Madill's Outdoor Painting
Doug Madill's passion is to paint outdoor scenes (en plein air) with a sense of realism, inventiveness, and spontaneity. "En plein air" is a French term which means "in the open air", and it is commonly used by artists world-wide that work on-site in front of outdoor subjects.
He usually searches outdoors on foot until he finds something that catches his attention. He'll also travel long distances just to paint an area he suspects is full of visual potential. He is still unsure what he will discover at first. It's a gamble of time and energy, yet he is immersed in a mystery until something is found: a scene that just clicks or clearly speaks to him in some way.
It usually takes him a couple hours (or more) to paint a composition on a small canvas or panel. Sometimes he might refine it a little further in the studio afterwards. The small sketches that he creates are painterly windows into his world. He finds subject matter on his daily commute, stroll to the cafe, walk-about in the desert, by a rural roadside, hike in the country, or around city life he may view on the sidewalk. He is constantly searching for pleasing geometries, harmonious patterns of light and dark, hidden stories, or an intriguing visual phenomena particular to a certain season, weather conditions, or time of day. Whatever he searches for, it’s always an emotional response which signals him to start a painting process from that creative spark to a clearer realistic depiction. That is his personal preference based on his love for nature, science, geology, and humanity’s challenging relationship with the environment or with each other. Learn more about Doug Madill here
