MADILLSTUDIO : The Art of Doug Madill
About The Artist
Doug Madill (born 1972) is a painter currently living in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. He attended Pratt Institute and studied Fine Arts from 1990-1994, majoring in Painting. He is originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. In 1980 his family moved to the rural suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio where Madill was inspired natural forms such as sprawling fields, forests and waterfalls as well as the parks and roadways, barns and old buildings. In elementary school he wrote surrealistic, descriptive poetry about nature and the senses. That endeavor transformed into more visual art pursuits, drawing from science fiction and fantasy art subjects at first, and then he delved into plein air studies in art school which became his main focus.
Beginning On The Rooftops
While at college, Madill discovered the study of en plein air painting on the rooftops of Pratt Institute's Brooklyn campus. It was at first a natural inclination for him to paint amidst a broader context outdoors than simply staying indoors. The challenge of a panoramic view of New York City, for example, thrilled him. Since then, Madill has pursued the lifelong study of painting the light, forms, and atmospheric effects of all kinds of scenery. He finds beauty in the cityscape of somewhere like the densely urban sites of New York City, or in the rugged, vast wilderness out in the American West.
